Root porn!!
 

This Neobenthamia gracilis was slowly rising in its pot over time and now I know why. There is no media left and the roots had been expanding!! I have it potted in 50-50 peat-sand media in a clay pot.

I figure y'all would enjoy this :evil::evil:

Not very easily! With my Phal (posted earlier), I soaked the roots, got a larger pot, carefully wound the roots into some sort of form that would go into the pot, and then used a blunt bamboo skewer to poke and proke bark chips down between all the roots...

Photo 3 cattleya roots, what happens when you don’t move your plants from time to time. And it is time to repot.

I use orchiata bark so my plants usually outgrow the pot before the media breaks down, so I usually just take the existing pot, throw it in a larger pot, and add media.

And I have no idea as to how I should repot this one. Many people suggest me to do it anyway, but I still don't have the courage to take action:(

Just put it in a larger pot and don’t take it out the current pot, unless the media is at risk of breaking down within the next few years.

Let ne find a bigger pot then :D

I have photos to share. Since my rented greenhouse is a 45 min drive from my house, I use a variety of potting media to suit my watering schedule (once a week in winter, twice a week in summer).

The first is an Aerides odorata growing in an 8" octagonal Vanda basket filled with spaghnum & bark (about 3:1).

The 2nd is a Paph that was in a plastic pot, filled with same mix.

Message: As long as you don't over-water, spaghnum remains an excellent medium for most orchids. I also use it for all Cattleyas in 2" & 3" pots, then they graduate into a bark/charcoal/perlite mix.

i find tolumnia to be very cool little orchids- i have one, this one, that is mounted on a piece of Grapewood and hung from the eave of my porch, like in nature, it gets soaked when it rains and it gets a ton of light and wind...right now there are only about 10 leaves as it has been dry here but last night i took a look and it is busy busy busy.

based on my past experience it will double in size this year and bloom a lot.

Not sure where you are in Texas but my moms in Dallas and since it is such a small place maybe I’d even deliver it lol.

I'm game to meet up sometime! I live in Austin though, so I'm 3 hours south. But there are tons of fun reasons to visit Austin (when the world returns to normal)!
