Root porn!!
This Neobenthamia gracilis was slowly rising in its pot over time and now I know why. There is no media left and the roots had been expanding!! I have it potted in 50-50 peat-sand media in a clay pot.
I figure y'all would enjoy this :evil: https://farm1.staticflickr.com/804/2...b3247dc8_k.jpgNeobenthamia gracilis by Stephen Van Kampen-Lewis, on Flickr |
It is always great to find a pot-full of roots! :)

Nice!
When orchids grow roots like these plants do, they are virtually unstoppable. I love it. |
Look at all those roots! **I like big roots and I cannot lie**
I have some root porn of my own: A Phal next to the pot it USED to fit in, before I untangled the roots (not a single rotten one!) https://shutterbug.ponzio.net/_data/...c4afdb7-me.jpg |
Wow!! Amazing they all fit in that pot!!
|
Here's my mini phal that has been in water culture for about 2 years. Bloomed for me twice.

Or the image file is too large? You can try resizing it and post again. Alternatively, you can upload the photo here (no account necessary): ImgBB — Upload Image — Free Image Hosting and then paste into a post the bbcode it generates. Works well, and other people on OB use that.

Love this thread, and would love even more the accompanying thread (for those growing in pots) how you re-pot these guys!!!

Just put it in a larger pot and don’t take it out the current pot, unless the media is at risk of breaking down within the next few years.

I have photos to share. Since my rented greenhouse is a 45 min drive from my house, I use a variety of potting media to suit my watering schedule (once a week in winter, twice a week in summer).
The first is an Aerides odorata growing in an 8" octagonal Vanda basket filled with spaghnum & bark (about 3:1). The 2nd is a Paph that was in a plastic pot, filled with same mix. Message: As long as you don't over-water, spaghnum remains an excellent medium for most orchids. I also use it for all Cattleyas in 2" & 3" pots, then they graduate into a bark/charcoal/perlite mix. |
i find tolumnia to be very cool little orchids- i have one, this one, that is mounted on a piece of Grapewood and hung from the eave of my porch, like in nature, it gets soaked when it rains and it gets a ton of light and wind...right now there are only about 10 leaves as it has been dry here but last night i took a look and it is busy busy busy.
based on my past experience it will double in size this year and bloom a lot. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9f50ceb_4k.jpgTiny tree frog by J Solo, on Flickr |
Tolumnia is my very favorite orchid.
