Extremely impressed with the vigor that Fred selects for in his species offerings. Orchids are fed a montly diet of microbes, kelp and fulvic/humic acids (new addition I've been trying out) alongside their fertilizer. I alternate between 40ppm N and 75ppm N of k-lite at every watering + 10 ppm potassium silicate.

The C. tigrina was re-potted in May and never missed a beat- this is the 3rd flush of primary roots from the rhizome and the 2nd flush of branching tips. I cant seem to water this plant enough because the root tips you see on the surface are just the "tip of the iceberg" so to speak. Expected to be 2 years out from blooming but I wouldn't be surprised to see blooms next summer from a plant from SVO. I couldn't help myself and bought a guaranteed tetraploid tigrina as well from their second wave offering. The plant pictured here is likely 3n, though I did buy the oryzalin treated version of this cross.

The C. violacea also bought from SVO is an experiment on whether or not I can grow and flower this species successfully in my largely intermediate temperature growing conditions with typically lower than ideal humidity- however my mornings are 60% plus with the windows open. So far, I have not found the violacea to be bothered at all from night temps around 60F (my night temps never get below 60F year round in my indoor space) or low-ish humidity. Plant is getting a lot of light but we will see if the top end temps are enough to get this thing to bloom as my temps rarely exceed 80F in the summer and never beyond 75F in the winter. The plant will be in need of another repot once its new growths come in and is growing in 2 directions.

Wow! That's great! And those conditions sound perfect for the violacea. I'd say they're more sensitive to cold than they are needy of heat.

Some more explosive root growth on this encyclia. I repotted from 2” squares to 4” terracotta last May. It’s been slowly working a spike so was hoping a repot would spur it along. I’ve been dragging my feet on repotting and then I knocked it off of the low shelf today and nary a piece of bark came out...it was time.

My Prosthechea cochleata coming out of its pot this morning. I planted this a couple of years ago in a very wide bulb pan but I guess it had to run out space some time...

Here is my Cymbidium Australian Midnight, one of my prized plants that I have grown out from a small seedling. I love the succulent foliage. Has not bloomed yet, can't wait!

This guy had lifted out of the pot about 1.5", when i unpotted I discovered why....

WaterWitchin 03-27-2021 04:01 PM

Gotta love Cymb root growth! I have several to divide and am dreading it. Time to get out the Sawsall...

camille1585 03-27-2021 05:00 PM

That's one very happy Cym!!!

DirtyCoconuts 03-27-2021 05:40 PM

I love the hyacinth collection too!!

I have some great root porn going on at my place. This is my Leptotes bicolor. It was in sphag, but you can't see it much anymore. The sphag stops about halfway down the root mass, and the rest is just a solid block of roots. I chucked it in a slightly larger pot about a month ago and it's happily filling the void with new roots. I water it every 1-2 days, just like a mount.

I was going to repot it in sphag in a clay pot, but at this point I'm not sure I want to mess with success!

Roberta 03-31-2021 12:49 PM

That is beautiful! Don't mess with success... watering like it was a mounted plant is perfect... these don't particularly like media. That bit of sphag looks like it provides plenty of moisture, the roots love to run wild.

I really love this species, and already killed 2 mounted plants. I just don't have high enough humidity for mounts, and often can't keep up with watering needs. The beauty of this system I discovered completely by accident (repotting procrastination) is that while it like water every 1-2 days, being in a pot means that it's also far for forgiving if I don't water for 4-5 days.

Cymbidium kanran

Cym. kanran roots are over 12'' long and as thick as my fingers :D However, finding a suitable pot that is not too big in the US is a real challenge.

Roberta 04-13-2021 10:10 AM

First, Welcome neighbor!

I suspect that you are looking for those tall Asian pots. Just over the LA county line, check out House of Bonsai - The Legendary Bonsai Superstore Online , store is physically located in Los Alamitos so you could visit them.

WaterWitchin 04-13-2021 10:43 AM

Or also Google "cymbidium pot tall" comes up with quite a few choices.

DirtyCoconuts 04-13-2021 04:06 PM

i use weird pot bc i think the typical cym pots are wayyyy too small---or 2-3 gallon landscaping pots

back to the porn.

i have been trying some pond filter as a mount and i like it.

also, roots on a wood slab is just dead sexy lol

Here is what I found when I unpotted this Cym.... lots and lots of good roots, with a bunch of new ones coming along. It had been in the pot for about 4 years, I knew that it was due, because I was getting a lot of weeds, which grow especially well when the bark is starting to break down. Indeed, the mix had pretty much turned to dirt, was very wet.

WaterWitchin 04-18-2021 08:47 PM

Hey Roberta! Ahem... time to repot, ya slacker.

That's why it was out of the pot! Plenty more where that one came from... Just bought another 3 cubic ft. bag of bark. I have my work cut out for me...

Water it! And watch it grow!

camille1585 04-28-2021 06:55 AM

The root porn on this Nefinetia is unbelievable! And it's a photo of just one side of the plant. And to think that it was nearly completely rootless when I bought it 2 years ago. I'd like to think I can take all the credit, but I think Kelpak (Kelpmax) also has a lot to do with it. I never had such amazing root growth until I started using it last July.

DirtyCoconuts 04-28-2021 08:53 AM

WOW!!! that is amazing!!

Roberta 04-28-2021 10:57 AM

That is spectacular!

WaterWitchin 04-28-2021 11:35 AM

That's awesome Camille! I've been growing my first for maybe half a year to year now. Have been doing semi-hydro... it doesn't appear to mind, but also doesn't appear to be really thriving. Have been thinking seriously about mounting it and putting in with a few other small mounted plants...a few Tolumnia, my Pondangis, a struggling Vanda in recovery mode, and a something I can't ever remember name of.

Seeing yours, pretty well convinced I'm gonna make that move. I've seen no growth on it that impressive. Says the woman who refuses to do any more mounted plants.

They just keep popping onto mounts... appears to be beyond my control. :blushing:
