If only roots behaved themselves...!

That's the advantage of hanging... if the roots go wild they can just expand where they want to go. Clearly they would rather not be in pots, and look for any opportunity to escape into the big wide world.

Clowesetum Black Jade, aka, Rooty McRoots. All of these are from this seasons growths. As of June, it was already one solid block of roots and it’s only gotten worse/better and now I’m just waiting on the pot to split lol. This thing is ridiculous and can drink up an unbelievable amount of water every night. Gonna be super annoyed if it doesn’t bloom this year…

roots grow to the humidity in my experience .could also be the cooler area, the shadier area or all three

I hang baskets under a tree and often the roots grow straight towards the tree. Not sure what they are sensing - whether it is the tree itself or just that it is the stable point the tree is providing.
Speaking of hanging baskets and roots https://i.imgur.com/OFMLtLm.jpg |
Wow! amazing roots Aceetobe!
Here is a Chrisnetia Green Light and Prosthecea (Encyclia) chacaoensis roots that are a little bit out of control... It seems to like dry sunny California air....... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9cf407aa_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6c5ef959_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...63d15851_z.jpg |

after repotting my latest Cattleya it just started producing roots like crazy.
You can't show how long it has taken for roots to appear but these have practically popped up overnight. The only thing I don't understand is why it has left just the tiniest gap for the new bulb poking out between the roots and to the right where there is no eye there is a big space left. The architect on this plant needs to get sacked  http://www.orchidboard.com/community...1&d=1629891858 |
hahaha that is the meri cell that got activated!!!
tiny miracles cannot be bothered with trifles like location!!! lol |
|
Nice! It looks like you had a transparent pot.
If you're in the midst of a transplant, you may now be wondering how to remove the media without demolishing the roots. Roots are plant mass no different than the top. I hate to lose it. -Keith |
When I have impacted roots, I just blast the root ball with a hose. Whatever is loose and broken down washes out, I just leave whatever is stuck to roots, pot it up in fresh medium and I and the plant are both happy.
|
|
Oh, YEAH! That one looks eager to escape the vessel and take over the room.
|
Feed me Seymour!
|
|
Now THAT is an impressive set of new root growth! What's that medium you are using? Looks like lava rock, but the color is too light for that.

Yeah!! I was wondering if it was clay or tocks.

Looks kind of like granite or sponge rock to me.

There's a couple of those I'm suspicious there's even an orchid involved... looks like root mass that's escaped and is crawling away from home!

When I talk about wild Cattleya-tribe roots this is what I have in mind. I put this Laelia Finckeniana (L. anceps x L. albida) in a wooden basket. It did OK, but once it escaped, it is growing and blooming much better. I expect flowers December-ish. But clearly, the plant does not want its roots confined even a little bit. The roots clearly are able to get all the water they need from the overhead sprinklers every couple of days (less often in winter)

Holy cow!!

That picture evokes in my mind the feeling of the first big stretch when you wake up on the morning. Just freedom and unfurling!!!
|
so it was time
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...73d8e481_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr a third spike showed up and finally died and i was getting worried the plant would suffer from the pot https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f007e8d6_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr now, keep in mind, my cym mix is peat, #4 perlite, leca, lava rock and charcoal........where is it all???? https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d62a440e_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr HUNGRY ROOTS!!! |
When I repot a beast like that, I just give the root ball a blast from a hose to wash out anything loose and broken down, then drop it into a larger pot. I don't try to take it apart unless I'm dividing it.
|
My only cymbidium also seems to absorb its media!! Lol
|
ZERO effort was put into ant sort of behavior- i added a ton MORE media around it in a 24" landscaping pot and pot it right front and center in the landscaping!!!
it will get about the same sun, maybe a little bit more. i am so excited. I have a lot of orchids hanging off other plants in my landscape but this is the first that is truly its own feature. thanks, R |

this is golden elf- and i should have said, zero effort was put into breaking apart the root mass, i just dropped it in and add more. - i am not articulate tonight
i will take a pic tomorrow when there is good light. she is the jewel of the yard and i expect that this year, it will be all about rooting- large up pot and more sun and more exposure to rain - then....drum roll, i fully expect growth off each point that was growing before (3) and then some..... if that works. i will be the proverbial pig in $%#& :) ---------- Post added at 11:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:12 PM ---------- oh, also... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...98120e82_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...73de04ed_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr "let's meet on the outside!" https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...282ed06a_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr |
