Here's a "before and after" of a very happy coerulea hybrid: C. Sea Breeze x Lc. Lois McNeil. I can't find pictures of this cross but both parents are beautiful!
I left this cattleya at my parents' home probably a decade ago and cut off a nearly rootless piece back in December just to practice rooting divisions. Today, I had to cut the plastic pot off the root system to slip-pot into a larger container. This is one happy plant! I'm ready to see blooms on this one! David |
I guess you can stop practicing now :)

Oooh! For some reason, the lack of any pattern or texture on those squishy roots reminds me of gummy worms... Though I'm sure they wouldnt taste the same

I love how this thread keeps going and going and going!! So much porn....

roots dont often get enough attention when flowers are the big draw.
growers, (...after you've killed 1000) like some of us have graduated into, appreciate a good root system just as much as wonderful flower :) |

I hope you all like my modest contribution. This Prosthechea sp. just doesnt like its pot! Its surprising to me that its putting out so many considering I'm just growing in an apartment, no humidifier or greenhouse. |
Looks like a happy plant. These tend to like to escape from their pots. When you water, you can keep those aerial roots happy with a heavy misting from a spray bottle (enough to turn them green)

I have a couple orchids I've thought about posting here, but here's one of my more crazy ones...
Dendrobium Bullenianum. I was told it likes to grow in baskets, well, it does... Sort of... As you can see it's packed the small basket it was put into a long time ago and they just keep going. I was told this orchid doesn't like to dry out during periods of growth, well, mine never dries out really ever. It's so thirsty that I sit a tray of water underneath the basket put wicks from the tray into the pot because I got tired of constantly watering it. It's randomly in flower throughout the year and happenned to be this week on one of it's earliest growths. Took a shot of those as well. |
Oooh, nice and curly!

That is one happy plant! I wouldn't bother trying to repot, just put the whole thing into a larger pot, no more medium. The space between the pots has enough extra humidity to make roots extremely happy. Santa Barbara Orchid Estate, a grower near me, does that... I have bought plants that, on repotting, had 5 or 6 pots-within-pots and roots-roots.
|
Roberta, you just read my mind ...I am dealing with pot size, and the fact of adding more medium or not. The problem is that I don't find a lot of widths pot around here and the ones I got are way too wide to just drop it without any medium. My second option was a clay pot, but I never use straight a clay pot, just as a second pot.

I think those look great. Just let them run wild. The roots don't really need anything except to be protected from bumping, and to keep them somewhat organized. The clay pots will also hold some moisture when you water. I don't think any medium is needed. I have found that Catts grow best once they escape the pot, which tells me they didn't want to be in one.

🙏 thank you

Ah, lovely pics as usual from this thread! I wonder if birds ever eat the red root tips of orchids in situ.. They sure do look like tasty little berries
