That Zygo looks so happy breaking out of its pot... does it need a pot at all??

aliceinwl 04-06-2020 03:33 AM

It was getting tough to keep this Zygo hydrated and I didn’t have time to water it daily so I cut off the sides of the plastic pot it was in (left the bottom in place because it would have caused a lot of damage to remove) and repotted it in a bigger clay pot. It didn’t miss a beat :-)

Not quite as striking as DC's Onc above, but this Pot. Golden Dancer 'NN' is enjoying this recent bout of heat and humidity. I predict she'll take over the basket by the end of the summer!

This zygo was totally root bound. I didn’t even try to unpack this mess as the roots were so rigid I was fearful of breaking them. Had to cut the old pot off and just slipped it into a slightly bigger pot.

smart move- those zygos'll do that...roots for days

Ok not my picture/plant, but I saw it and thought that I NEEDED to share with the thread haha

Roberta 07-25-2020 05:29 PM

Gee.... think maybe this one needs to be repotted? Or maybe not... it seems quite happy enough as it is.

Back in early November 2019, I purchased a flat with Cym. dayanum seedlings from C&H. Most of the seedlings were single growth, but with 1 or 2 starts each. Plantlets were nice, so I potted most of them up into 2.1/2" pots. A few had too long roots, so they went into 3.1/2"; the runts were potted 3-4 pcs into 3.1/2" size also.

Yesterday, just 7 months later, I noticed that many of the larger plants were pushing themselves out of the 2.1/2" pots, so I pulled 30 for re-potting. Here is the first one I pulled out of the pot. The red arrow points to the original seedling, which set 2 new growths (both near BS now). Each of these have 1-3 new starts already. I was unable to fit these into 4.1/2" regular pots, had to go to 100 mm (4") extra deep pots to accommodate the roots.

Last time I grew Cym. dayanum from plugs (similar size), I bloomed one in 11 months, so I anticipate that I will get a few blooms on these this coming winter. The rest will certainly be blooming size by the fall of 2021.

DirtyCoconuts 07-26-2020 09:44 AM

Wow. That’s growing like a weed!!

Fairorchids 07-26-2020 01:47 PM

I grow all my Cymbidiums in a 'European' style terrestrial mix, where almost 30% is composted manure. Then we fertilize every 2 weeks on top of that.

Don't worry, I won't put in too large a pot. I don't even thing I have one big enough for a size up at this point! lol

This one has already pushed itself a few inches out of the current pot! I'll have to grab a photo and post it here.

isurus79 08-01-2020 04:27 PM

Here is the current state of things. The roots have pushed the plant pretty far out of the pot!

WaterWitchin 08-02-2020 09:10 AM

I have a question. I wasn't familiar with this plant so looked it up. It appears in the wild to grow on top of rocks or on top of the ground. Couldn't you take a big plant tray, drill some holes in the bottom of the tray, put scoria in the tray and plunk it on top? In other words, let it grow shallower? Then you could hang it? Just a question...

DirtyCoconuts 08-02-2020 03:58 PM

I always grew it in a soil mix because it like water but that’s a dandy idea too

I can also send you a small keiki next round. It’s not on Steve’s level but it’ll get ya started

Yep, that's one way to grow it! My understanding is this one is not picky about what it grows in!

That's how mine started! I got a single growth keiki. The original owner asked me earlier in the year, "is that one I gave you from my collection?!" I don't think he grows his as bright as mine. lol

WaterWitchin 08-03-2020 07:46 AM

How fun! You know I'm game Coconut. How wet is wet? Like Phrag wet?

DirtyCoconuts 08-03-2020 10:01 AM

Hard to compare bc it is terrestrial but in a lava rock tray I’d treat it as semi hydro and keep it moist at all times.

Pretty cool idea. I’m excited to see it

DirtyCoconuts 08-05-2020 11:49 AM

i'll celebrate roots today since all the flowers are getting taken from me....(bleeping lizards!!)

this phrag was in ceramic vessel and i had felt like she was cramped so i up-potted her

the beauty of a healthy S/H root mass is hard to beat!
