That white string looks like packing material used to protect the spikes—the black spots look like normal leaf drop as this orchid goes dormant.

That's a beautiful max! I found some critters in mine and ultimately had to divide it and really stress the plant out... A week later it sent out a bloom! LOL. they really are tough.
