Thought it would be cool to start a list of orchids that everyone thinks are the "must haves" for every collection? Can be any genera!

Since I'm no expert and my collection has recently begun, I will start the list with a few that I "had to have".

(I hope this post is in the right category, moderators please feel free to move it elsewhere if you find it more appropriate).

My must haves:

•Brassalova Nodosa
The interesting foliage, ease of growth, of course the fragrance and that it is a species.

•Maxillaria Tenufloria
Fragrance of course! Coconut scented anything is my favorite... It also seems to grow like a weed!

•Dendrobium Kingianum
For the intense fragrance and beautiful canes

•Sedirea Japonica
I love the compact size and even though mine hasn't flowered yet, I hear it's a fragrance must have

•Blc. Dan O'Neil
I love the Orange waxiness of the flower

So what's your list?! I'd be particularly interested in hearing which Cattleyas you consider the "must haves or classics"!

I would really like a Blc. George King 'Serendipity'. An old classic. I have been trying to get one for several years, but haven't succeeded yet.

I have all but the last of your suggestions, Joeturbo! My Sediria is in bloom, but so far, there's no fragrance :-(.

People tell me that the Angraecum Didieri is another one that everyone should have. I killed the first one, so I'm not sure that it is an orchid I could recommend at this point!

That's the next one on my wish list! They have it for sale on Waldor orchids website (I love them) but I kinda want to wait until I can actually make it there instead of ordering it!

I wish it was easier for Canadians to order from the U.S.

I think there was a thread about everyone's favorite orchids in the past. maybe too long by now. lol

I also like B. nodosa and its hybrids.
Anything that smells nice. hahaha
In that light, neofinetia and certain hybrids of it.
Miltoniopsis can be very fragrant, and they are all pretty or interestingly patterned, and flowers last for good two months.

I'm a lady slipper person, so any good paphs are must haves. hahaha

Then I have a whole bunch of other stuff that I enjoy growing and flowering.

What's a 'must have'? Easy. It's the next nice orchid you see in the catalogue!

Is that you or your significant other who's asking? ;-)
My wife probably thinks I don't need any more greenery.... I on the other hand have a dream list several miles long. I'm likely not alone in this.
Bulbophyllum binnendijkii, Phalaenopsis schilleriana, Stanhopea wardii, Lepanthes telipogoniflora and some Catasetum are at the top of my list of things to try at least once.

In general though, any collection needs an oddball, something that differs blatantly from the rest.
Or stark contrasts in general, I guess.

Oh man, I have to say, though it's been said a thousand times before, that Onc. Heaven Scent (or any Sharry Baby hybrid) has a wonderful fragrance, the flowers are pretty and numerous, and the plant is compact.

Zygolum Rhein 'Moonlight' has a lovely sweet fragrance and blooms at least twice a year reliably. I think it's fairly easy to grow; likes fairly bright light and is thirsty. I particularly love this plant b/c I have a peloric plant and it's flowers are so big and beautiful. Right now I've got two spikes with three blooms each.

I've long wanted a Propetalum and finally I found one (Thanks Fred Clark at Sunset Valley Orchids!). It's a near blooming size new cross so I haven't seen it bloom yet but it's basically a mini/compact plant and I couldn't be more pleased with that. Oh don't worry, when it blooms you'll know it.

Recently got Phal. stuartiana and I think this plant is awesome. It's got mottled silvery leaves, it's miniature, and its white blooms have a red spotted lip as well as the bottom two sepals. Fantastic.

I also definitely think Zygonisia Cynosure (pick a hybrid, I've got three ) is a beautiful - though mine not really fragrant - beautiful flower to have, a must have for me the moment I saw its picture on here.

Tolumnias. Have four myself - two are newbies that came bareroot and not sure if they like me or are happy here yet - and these small plants take up next to no room and their tiny little flowers on long spikes are impressive relative to their size.

Then I'm going to have to be vague and say I think you have to have at least one Oncidium, Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, Zygopetalum in your collection. I should probably say Dendrobium though I have yet to acquire one (i'm not a fan of their long stalk-like appearance but I will fold eventually for a small one). I also think you should have a bloom for every color: purple, red, orange, yellow, white, green, blue (or the closest you can get in the orchid world), pink, and the list goes on. Funny though b/c every time I think "Oh man I need more yellows in my collection" I suddenly realize I actually have quite a few, so something like color-balance is impt to me.

Trollsvans, I think I'll have to agree with you that everyone should have an oddball. Now based on this that means I'm going to need to get another one as I don't think I really have any genuine 'oddballs'...oh darn...

---------- Post added at 06:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:28 PM ----------

And you know what actually I must have a Cymbidium some day though I do not think I have the space for them nor can I tend to their need for such high light. But I do profess, the day will come!

Oh yeah and when I saw Slc. Jewel Box 'Dark Waters', there was no going back. Now if only I can get it to bloom again...

To me, since I'm a beginner, one of each type is good for now...I already have 2 Phals, 1 Dend, 1 Cambria (Oncidium), 7 Cymbs and 1 Phap. Missing all the rest.
