It looks like something from the cattleya...
It looks like something from the cattleya alliance. The spike reminds me of Coilostylis (Epidendrum) ciliare. So it could be that. Congratulations on the spike!

I just experimented with Masdevallia floribunda which is a good beginner's Masdevallia to start with. I just potted the plant in New Zealand Sphagnum moss which is in a clay pot. Small size is okay....
