Is this even an orchid? Male
Default Is this even an orchid?

My mother in-law found this growing in her backyard, she is an avid gardener but did not plant it (that she remembers) nor does she know where it came from. Before it flowered we thought it might be an orchid based on the bulbs, but it was growing wild almost too easily for an orchid (), she has pulled and potted well over a dozen more baby plants from the same area. She gave me this division and it bloomed within a couple of weeks. The flowers are very small, less than the size of a nickel. It is still potted in the soil from the backyard, I have not even thought about looking at the roots.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

It is an orchid. It seems to be some sort of Eulophia orchid. They readily spread their seeds and germinate in the ground especially in Florida.

Wow! Very neat. So is this a native Florida orchid? Would seem to make sense.

Thanks for the feedback, seems I have a little more research to do and now I know where to start.

P.S. Disregard the native Florida comment. Already learning more after 5 minutes on Google.

It is what you say. It is not a Florida Native, it is from Africa and has become quite an exotic weed here in Florida.

Yep, it's Oeceoclades maculata. I have one of these in my collection (nice little plant if you live somewhere that it can't become a weed).
