Cut off the dead roots and stick it in a glass of water. Not high enough to get water into the crown though. Just stick the butt end in.
I did this with a dying phal a couple months ago and now...

I've never used the copper, but, I use the sulfur...
I've never used the copper, but, I use the sulfur copiously. I've not seen any problems with my orchids, from using it.
