Phalaenopsis leaf/stem turing brown. Please help!

Cut off the dead roots and stick it in a glass of water. Not high enough to get water into the crown though. Just stick the butt end in.

I did this with a dying phal a couple months ago and now it has new roots growing and a new leaf coming in.
