first time you bought an orchid? ?
I bought my first orchid in 1958 on my honeymoon in Florida. We saw a sign along the highway and stopped just for curiosity. The man who sold the plants potted them in gravel. Of course, it didn't...

So who's put their plants out already?
I am still struggling to get all my plants out. Due to back problems, being on my feet for any length of time is painful. I also have some large ferns that desperately need to come out. One plant...

scale on my orchids--I want them GONE!
It is time for me to get serious about the scale. I see lots of recommendations for using Bayer as a spray. I have a nice unopened bottle waiting for some info as to how to use it as a spray. The...

Are drainage holes needed?
IF you grow your plants in an outer decorative pot w/o drain holes and have them outside, you will have to drain the water out every time it rains. That is a regular pain because, as Ray noted, you...

Dendrobium aggregatum aka Dendrobium lindleyi
I have two of these and was much discouraged by the comments on its difficulty. However, this winter the smaller plant bloomed but the larger one did not. So, I am encouraged to give them a real...

I just received a C. Jose Marti 'Mother's Favorite' from Hausermann's. A huge plant in a 10" pot with four spikes. Anxiously awaiting the blooms.

Where to buy Phal. gigantea?
jkt97401. Sorry for the delay in replying. I had some serious back surgery on 2/4 and am in recuperation (I hope). The plant was smallish-8-9" or so but in good shape. P. gigantea grows very...

S/H question
Thanks all for your responses. I guess I did not make myself clear. The plant appears to have roots on the older growths and has bloomed but it is in that broken pot with sphagnum (which does not...

I should be receiving a Phal. gigantea tomorrow from Seagrove Orchids. I'll let you know how it is and maybe include a photo.

I buy from them frequently. Very well packed, sudden shipping, no arguments when you have a problem with a plant, 100% positive feedback on eBay.

I am switching over to semi-hydro so adequate pots are a necessity. DH loves prunes and I find the container an ideal size for smaller plants. Juice bottles, bleach jugs, milk jugs, anything that...

Phal gigantea with yellowing leaves
It does not look very good. It has just one leaf (large) left and what looked like a root emerging seems to be drying up. I'm really not optimistic about its surviving the winter. :(

The Phal. gigantea is hanging on a line below my vanda collection. The vandas are misted twice daily for an hour each time. So, some of the mist reaches the Phal. I check for moistness of the moss...

Yes, that was also mentioned (the crown rot) but when I cut off the new leaf as far as I could, what was left was green, not rotted. I have not seen anything I would consider as rot. The leaves have...

The plant had four leaves. One had fallen when I wrote in about the problem. The second one was just about all yellow when I cut it off near the main stem. The newest leaf grew only about 1 1/2",...
