They ARE commonly grown in the ground in tropical areas where they grow like weeds, with copious roots above ground similar to what Mauro describes.

Becca, this plant sits in water (in a saucer, water added) most of the time. Fertilized & "treated" with Bayer Advanced Rose & Flower Care a few times when it is outside...
