Neofinetia falcata, Mangekyo 万華鏡

A bit off season, though at this point, I'm not sure if it's considered early or late.









万華鏡 - Mangekyo. Three spur variety with pink spurs and pink and green blushes to the petals. The variety was selected in Korea from the offspring of a cross between Manjushage and Raizan.

This one is just wonderful looking! Looks like little shooting stars or fireworks with the white center and pink spurs. I'd love one to find one of these or similar.

This is my Neof. Mangekyo. I learned of this cultivar from this Hakumin thread and immediately knew I had to have one.

I purchased it in 2018 and its first two bloomings were less than spectacular, actually quite bad. The first blooming had some of the flowers missing one of the secondary spurs. I was so upset I PMed Hakumin and he assured me that the same thing happened to him initially but the plant would correct that on succeeding bloomings. It did, all buds then had three spurs but some buds never opened. That of course was on me for bad culture. Finally the third blooming is fine, pictured here, not anywhere near as deep colored as Hakumin's spectacular plant but attractive nevertheless, almost pastel pink spurs. I understand additional light may make it darker but even if not, I'm happy with it.

This question is specific to Neofinetia naming rules as recognized in Japan and Korea. Please limit all discussions with that in mind.

Mangekyo is a cross between N Manjushage and N Raizan whose defining characteristic is triple pink spurs.

Selfing and then sib crossing the resulting with triple pink spurs was done to increase the numbers, with removing any without the defining characteristic.

Was there any back crossing to an original parent, either Manjushage or Raizan, resulting in not a 50%/50% mix but a 75%/25%? If such resulted in triple pink spurs, would such plants be considered to be Neof. Mangekyo?

From what I can see of the plant in the background behind the flowers, it's not a bad looking plant, either.

Just a typical clean green leafed Neo. Surprisingly the growth with the spike in flower is a small secondary growth and not the mother growth which has a spike developing but held off on its development to allow its child to shine.

The secondary growth is bent forward with only two leaves visible in the photo. You are looking at the primary growth.
