Looks like a pea. Very pretty, but not an orchid.

Not an orchid, its in the pea family, actually looks like a pea. Sorry, but still exciting.

Yeah, it is a pea. But what are those mysterious yellow flowers in background?

WhiteRabbit 02-03-2011 06:27 PM

regardless, it's very pretty! thanks for sharing!

I heard the one in the picture is an perennial sweetpea.

The yellow flowers cover the hill there in abundance,
not sure what they are.

Yes, the pea is a perrential sweetpea, Lathyrus Grandiflorus. A lot of people have them in their gardens near where I live in france (Lyon) and the seeds sometimes end up in nature.

As for the yellow plant, that's another common garden plant, Hypericum calycinum. Once they get settled they spread quite rapidly with underground stems, sort of like bamboo. My grandparents planted some 40 years ago and they regret it, it's taking over that area of the yard.

This is what I love about the orchid board - everyone is super friendly and helpful, even if its not an orchid. Thanks everyone for making it such a nice place to hang out :D
