Canon 7D

My rebel XTi has served me faithfully for over two years already, but she is beginning to show wear.
And it appears to be time that I took things to another level.

I definitely can't wait to try the 7D out on the annual orchid show coming up this spring at the MOBOT; at least, once I get the hang of things (button configurations take some getting used to).

My new baby (and an accessory) and one of the last pics that would be taken with my old cam. Thought it appropriate to retire her this way.

I haven't used the video that much - has it been a problem?

I've only recently heard about this. But I bet it has to do with those people in the hotter parts of the country.

Though last night I was working on a video shoot for a new Cooking show and we had a 7D as the behind the stove top camera so it could look down into the pans. After two 12 minute sessions recording it toally locked up and gave an error code saying the sensor had overheated and needed to cool before shooting more. It was a hot stove with lots of activity on all the gas burners. No wonder!

There's a firmware fix for that problem now. If you haven't been informed of it it's available at Canon.

Good to know about the firmware fix - although I haven't had any problems with overheating with mine. Congrats if you are going to get one! I picked one up a month ago and love it! It's a great camera, nice solid body, and I appreciated the weather sealing while shooting in the rain and humidity of Kaua'i.

The only real issue I had at first was needing to upgrade photoshop to process the RAW images - I was using CS3 which doesn't recognize the 7D RAW. You can also use the adobe DNG converter, which is free, to handle this.

I don't have a 7d. I'm still using my 40D but looking to add another body. I'm still not sure if I want another "crop" body or go to a FF sensor. And the 1D series used market has really opened up with the release of the 1D IV. Maybe picking up a nice used 1D III with it's 1.3 crop body. But I'm kind of leaning toward the 5D with it's full frame. My 24-70L just isn't at it's fullest on my 40D. It's a great lens on any Canon EOS body, but it would shine brighter on a FF body. Maybe a used or refurbed 5D classic?

Still mulling it over...

Sorry for the late response.

I love this machine. I really don't utilize the video at all and almost wished that it wasn't a feature in there for the sake of a lower price, but ah well.
The two things that I love (and caused me to get it) are the remote flash unit and the 8 fps. With the remote flash unit (I already have a 580EX II) I can do more creative portraiture shots vs improvising with mirrors.
And I am a big sports shooter (especially of track), so the heightened frame rate gets a lot of mileage; it is usual for me to take at least 1200 pictures at each track meet.
The flash feature was what made me choose this over the 50D and the framerate made me choose it over the 5D Mark II.

Other nice features are the leveling tool for building shots, weather sealing, and better noise reduction (useful for shooting museums or events such as concerts).

Now I can focus on expanding my lens collection.

Some sample shots; my recent orchid show thread is a bigger example from that camera.

Utilizing the flash. Haven't actually got to utilize this in portraiture yet as I have been busy, but I have been using it to take pictures of items.
Don't ask me why the cat is attracted to the flash. Couple shots later, she was actually rubbing her face on it.

Example of the high framerate.
