potting/repotting neofinetia
 

I bought a neofinetia that was planted in a 4" pot, with a fairly compact amount of sphagnum moss. From what I have read and the size of the plant, this seems wrong to me and I am seriously considering repotting it to a much smaller pot, at a slight slant with a lot less moss. Any help appreciated, as I am new to this type of orchid. Thanks!

I'm not a Neofinetia expert, but there is a very large number of threads on Neofinetia care here on Orchid Board. I suggest you use the Search feature in the top maroon menu bar. I know a great many people do grow them in sphagnum moss, but there are tricks one needs to learn.

I grow mine in small clay pots with bark. You can pot them up with what works best for your environment and watering style. I hope others will chime in for you.

It sounds like you want to pot up in the Japanese method. If so, there are videos on youtube: OrchidWebTV.

Unless you have a very large 6+ fans, a 3" pot should be sufficient. Smaller plants (beanleafs) or single fans should have even smaller pots. If you continue to use sphag, you should use a net pot or something very open.

A pic of the whole plant and pot and the name of the cultivar would be helpful.

You don't have to pot in the Japanese method. If you choose not to, all the usual rules apply.

I stuck mine onto a mount. So far it hasn't grown much this summer, but it has put out two long roots.

That sounds good. I am not ready for mounted plants yet. I am hoping to be next year. I have a new set up for them all and I want to see how that works over the winter before I do mounting.
