New set up for vandas a success!

Most of my vandas failed to bloom this summer for some reason. I switched fertilizer and maybe that did not work out so well and I wasn't as diligent with watering. I miss the big blooms and striking colors so I decided to think of a new set up in my one bedroom apartment and saw the kitchen table that I don't use at all and decided to try a 250 watt HPS bulb. I also amped up the fertilizer and watering to give them a boost and the results did not disappoint!

There's another one blooming at the back that I can't take a good shot of and a Pachara Delight that bloomed ahead of everybody last month. I'm gonna try a higher wattage next time and lift it higher up to accommodate more plants. I also see a little bit of burn on one of the leaves but I'm not worried about it. I can't wait for the Euanthe sanderiana to bloom though... it's being stingy on me!

New set up for vandas a success!

A general, editorial comment or two:

Very often, when someone changes to a new product, whether that be a medium, a fertilizer, whatever, they start paying closer attention to their plants, providing overall better care, and when the plants respond, the first thought is "Holy crap. This stuff is great!", when in reality, even if the products is beneficial, it isn't THAT beneficial, or may have not been used long enough to make a difference anyway, and are really responding to the better overall care.

That certainly was the case when the MSU fertilizers were introduced, and that sort-of thing seems to be fairly common among orchid growers, in general.

Unless your plants are particularly undernourished, changing from one fertilizer formula to another isn't going to show demonstrable effects for a very long time - many, many months, if not a year or more - and if it didn't address a deficiency, never.
