new acquisitions! is this one...preggers?
TL;DR scroll down for my question.
so I couldn't resist checking out Lowe's for orchids...and a couple of mini phals jumped out at me. Lowe's actually labels theirs...so I got a Timothy Christopher and a Doud Violet. the Timothy Christopher is actually fragrant! I am so happy about that...I never expected to find a fragrant phal. the Doud Violet is a rescue orchid - I bought it for $3.50, severely dehydrated and without blooms - I have no idea what this one's going to look like. I repotted both, and the roots on both look great (which is a great relief on that Doud Violet - she'll probably survive.) regrettably though, they were both potted in pots that had no drainage, and the only pot I have with suitable drainage...fits both orchids in it. so, they're in the same pot for now  oh well. when I get new pots in, I'll fix this. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...s/100_2835.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...s/100_2832.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...s/100_2839.jpg TL;DR so here's my question. one of the Timothy's flowers was drying up, I didn't think anything of it at first...but now I notice that the stem on that one flower is enlarged and a getting darker, more firm... has it been pollinated? will anything need to be done, or do I just need to let nature run its course and enjoy it? http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...s/100_2833.jpg |
Yes, you've got an seed pod there. If you're a member of an orchid society, perhaps someone does flasking. You can send it out to orchidorigins.com as well.

How exciting!

squeeeeeeee that is exciting! I'm so glad I picked that one up. and I feel like I get to play the orchid lottery and see what will grow out of it...this will be fun :D
so is there anything I need to do in the meantime? at what point is the seed pod ripe, and what do I need to do? |
pssssst guys. it's yellow. is it time to harvest, or did something go wrong?

If it's turning yellow this early it is aborting. It usually takes at least 5 months for a seed pod to mature.

Yes, sorry, looks like it's gone. They swell up a lot more than that if they take. It could be the pollen that it got wasn't compatable.
The good news is that now next time they flower you'll be able to try crossing your named varieties! Just read up on flasking first, and be prepared to wait a few years! |
bummer. nah, I have borderline too many orchids already, I probably shouldn't get into breeding XD this one was just convenient.
