Help Needed: Dendrobium Identification
2 Attachment(s)
Good day everyone. A good friend of mine gave me pots of orchids last December as a Christmas and birthday gift. I was really touched by his thoughtfulness and promised that I will do my best to take care of them. Since then, my interest in orchids started to grow. I think Im doing fairly well in terms of maintaining them (they're all still alive ) but I wasnt successful finding their names-- just when I thought I found the right name, here appears the same flower but with another name. :(
Ive attached pics which were taken when they were all still in bloom. Would really appreciate all your feedback and expertise. |
Welcome to Orchid Board Gofa :welcome:
If your orchids are not identified it can sometimes be impossible to find exactly what they are. As you have found there can sometimes be lots of ones that look the same, especially with the very popular geneus which have been hybridised many many times without records of what is in them. Yours look like Dendrobium, probably many of them are hybrids of Dendrobium phalaenopsis from the look of the flowers. This is one of the areas where there are lots and lots of hybrids which are completely unregistered and unamed and many of them look very similar to each other. We call them NoID here and many of us (inluding me) have many NoIDs. They are just as pretty, don't worry too much if you can't find an exact name. If you are anything like me you may try and buy more named ones in the future as you get more involved with this hobby, but I still love my NoIDs as well  As for care, I think that advise for the care of Dendrobium phalaenopsis should be fine for you and it looks like you are doing well so far. Generally Den phals like plenty of light, but as with all orchids take care about not giving too much direct light. They should be kept evenly moist but not too wet. They tend to like standard house temperatures. They DON'T want the winter rest which is required for some other Den types. |
Looks like Rosie C has it right. These are most likely dendrodium phalaenopsis type (flower form and inflorescence suggest this).
Many crosses (from seed) have been made (and not registered). Siblings resulting from the same parentage can look quite different from each other. You may never learn your plants true parentage unless dna was tested. What you likely have are mericlones. Mericlones are exact reproductions of an attractive 'mother' plant. Evern though it is a No ID, these can be enjoyed just as much as a plant whose name is known. |
I have presently in bloom a Dendrobium Violetta that has, needless to say, purple flowers. The purple flowers on the dens you have look exactly like the one I have.

Since this is a Dendro Identification forum may I post mine also?
I sold this NoId dendro 2 months ago in cubao (farmers, Gofa knows it also) for about Php85.00 ($2 +/-). The flower is unusually big and looks like Cattleya. The seller just called it "Dendrobium Cattleya" http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/8263/02242010023.jpg http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/8639/02242010021.jpg Maybe some of you guys can give an ID for this one. Thank You |
Do you have a pic of the entire plant?
Again, this is very likely one of those wonderful NOIDs. Does the seller know where he got the plant? If there is a number on the tag/label, the info can sometimes be used to track down a plant's name. |
Makaldoy, that looks so beautiful! I want one like that, lol! Ive never been to that part of Farmers Market yet but Ive seen some hybrid orchids at my friend's house which his mom bought from there-- they are stunning indeed. I should ask him to go with me there really soon.
How do I post pics using the quick reply? Anybody? |
