Flat and reddish phalaenopsis root tips under LEDs

Hi, all. I'm trying to grow some phals under LEDs. They're doing fairly well, but I'm not getting the really long, plump, pointy root tips I was hoping for. Instead, root tips start out very green,...

Is it important to remove fishing line after an orchid is established?

Hi, all. I'm trying mounted orchids for the first time, and I'm using fishing line to initially secure them to their mounts. Is it important to remove the fishing line after the orchid is established...

Algae in my pots

Hi there. I have several spots of what I think must be algae growing in my phal pots which raises several questions:

Am I overwatering, and allowing too much water to sit in the pots? (The...

This is just the way Dracula orchids bloom. Two of my Draculas spike from the bottom with downward-facing blooms. The Olmosii spikes from the top, but the blooms still point down.

During the day,...

Dracula Olmosii in Bloom

Hi, all. I've been growing Dracula orchids in a terrarium since October, and my dracula olmosii just bloomed. When I got it, it was in pretty bad shape because it was in a greenhouse that was much...

Agreed. I'll either switch to white lights, or do some trial and error.

I grow my Dracula orchids under white LEDs, and the lux meter seems to help me give them exactly what they need, but with...

I think you may be right. The roots that are shaded from the light are as healthy as you could possibly want, and the roots directly exposed are the ones affected. I installed egg crate as a light...

I think this might be it. Another root has emerged right next the successful spike on the other side. Had that spike been aborted, it might have been the same situation.

It's from The Martian. Read the book, but haven't seen the movie yet. It does look good, though.

Did this spike turn into a root?

Hi, all. You might think I’m crazy, but I’m pretty sure that a spike on one of my phals turned into a root.

I moved my phal to a colder location to get it to spike, and it did. But I was...

Water orchids potted in lava rock

Hi, all. I'm currently using both lava rock and Seramis as mediums. I like both, but I slightly prefer lava for reasons I won't get into here. The problem is that I'm not sure how to "scale" lava...

Weened Haul

Added a Dracula Olmosii to my burden over the weekend. I saw one at a greenhouse that was nearly dead from the heat. Not sure if I can save it, but I figured it was worth $20 to try.
