Some oncidiums are very prone to leaf spotting. Avoiding overhead watering will minimize but may not eliminate them. I would not be too concerned. One of my oncidiums had leaf spots when I...

Bacteriostat/Algicide

There are a number of bacteriostatic products made specifically for humidifiers on the market. Check online for sources. I have used one teaspoon per gallon of Essick Air Products Humidifier...

Bacteria in Worm Tea

OK as a retired microbiologist I will climb on my soapbox briefly. Bacteria can be harmful or beneficial. The whole selling point of worm tea is that it is supposedly loaded with beneficial...

Worm Tea

I tried using worm tea on one of my Phals. I think the claims of this being a "superior" fertilizer are greatly exaggerated. After four months of use I saw no improvement over regular fertilizer. I...

Oncidiums are medium to bright orchids, similar to Cattleyas. Summering outdoors will help if there is enough mid-day shading. Wintering will require a South facing window to achieve enough light. ...

Other than the advice you have already received, Phals need some fall chilling to spike reliably. Ten to 14 days of nighttime temperatures of 60-65 degrees should be sufficient to initiate flower...

LECA

Leca is an acronym for lightweight expanded clay aggregate. Hydroton and Prime Agra are basically the same product, just slight differences in manufacturing and Prime Agra supposedly has superior...

S/H media

The media typically used in S/H is expanded clay aggregate and is 100% inorganic. So unless you are allergic to the dust particles (removed by careful washing) you should be fine.

Holes

A cheap electric soldering iron makes neat holes unless the plastic is very thick. A drill will also work but you must be careful to avoid cracking the plastic.

I think you will be pleased with S/H. Don't be surprised if the orchids sulk for a few weeks while they adapt to the new growth conditions. I started switching to S/H in March of this year and now...

Root growth

Strangely enough the miniatures had the best aerial roots of the four. I believe the containers were too narrow and too tall for these small orchids. They are doing better in larger but shorter...
