You were totally right - the big pot was just for show and the orchid's roots were squashed inside the little pot. It looks like it was planted in a moss - which hasn't been draining very well and...

I bought this orchid from a shop and it had no tag. I have NO idea what species it is. Unfortunately I never took photos of the flowers - they are smallish and purple and bloomed for about 5 months...
