I bought this orchid from a shop and it had no tag. I have NO idea what species it is. Unfortunately I never took photos of the flowers - they are smallish and purple and bloomed for about 5 months on several thin stems. I just would like to identify it so that I know how to look after it correctly. Any ideas?

I was thinking the same as Becca with the potting medium. From the pic it looks like it should be replaced.

Hi Hatter

This one is definitely a Dendrobium but I think it's a hybrid rather than a species.

It needs to be repotted, what it's in looks way too fine for a Den.

Here's a culture sheet for Dendrobiums:

Thanks everyone - I searched for photos of the blooms online and its definitely a dendrobium. Now at least I can read up on the right conditions for it. The potting soil looks like a mixture of soil and wood chips. What should I change it to?

Hi Hatter! I use the following potting mix for my dendrobiums: Dendrobium Orchid Mix

But it is all a matter of preference, I am sure others will join in on what they like and what works for them as well.

I make my own mix. I use 4 parts medium coco husk chunks : 1 part perlite : 1 part charcoal. All my dens are doing great in it, and I have several different types. I agree with everyone else that it needs to be repotted.
