Adaptation
"Adaptation" is not a book but a great movie with Nicholas Cage that I enjoyed very much and I think you will too... It's hard to find but I recommend it.

Here's the image. The roots grow way up on the stem and is not very floriferous... it usually only produces one or two flowers which are a dull red.
