That's a root alright. But it looks healthy so you shouldn't have to wait too long for bloom. It's in sphag, so be careful that it doesn't stay too wet.

Good luck! Vandas are so rewarding when they bloom. I got a red vasco for my birthday 2 years ago and every time it has formed spikes, something has happened to them. Earwigs got them last time.

I also use lava rock. It's much easier to get where we are and in a lot cheaper. My phrag has been in s/h in lava rock for about 3 years and it really loves it. I flush with each watering.
