Record-high heatwave taking its toll...

S. Korea recently hit with the record-high heatwave, hottest temperature ever recorded since 20th century--with day temperature of 39°C and night temperature of 33°C... (That high night temperature...is the real problem.) It has been going smothering hot for almost three weeks straight.

By balcony has turned into a torturing ground for cool-growing plants. I lost couple of Cyms and even one of my Phals got exhausted and succumbed to rot. I managed to save my Masdevallias though, by moving them into my air-conditioned bedroom every night.

By the way, my Mediterranean herbs (sages and basils) are growing well, also my perilla plants are doing great...well that's a little bit of comfort..

We've had the opposite in Indonesia, a "cold wave". I don't know if such a thing actually exists but it's been cold/cool in the last few weeks. People have been getting sick... including me haha.

Luckily none of my plants are too affected...
Sorry for your cyms and phals...
I hope your masdevallias and your remaining orchids survive though!

Final list of casualties

September came and the record-shattering heat wave ended completely, but it left a bunch of casualties in its wake. :(

Angraecum didieri
Calanthe vestita
Coelogybe assamica
Cymbidium tortisepalum var. longibracteatum
Cym. kanran
Den. dichaeoidea
Den. ochraceum
Den. subuliferum
Phal. bellina
Phal. amabilis

Some of them are heat-loving plants, but the scorching high night temperature above 30 deg. C waa too much for them that they got weakened to fell to the fungal infection...:((

Ironically, my Masdevallias survived: I evacuated them to my office where air conditioning would keep them around 27 degrees C. Now they have returned, and are growing happily now.

Btw, my Catt. labiata has lost much of its roots, and Catt.(Laelia) purpurata has a rotten pseudobulb. Thankfully they are recovering for now....
