Dendrobium kingianum x hancockii ???
I've stumbled upon an very interesting item from one of the my favorite local shops.
(Sorry the link is in Korean) 즐거운 온라인 쇼핑공간에 오신 것을 환영합니다! The item in question is labeled as 'Den. kingianum "+" den. hancockii', but I think they meant kingianum x hancockii. As you can see from the link, the plant itself resembles hancockii very closely, but the flower definitely has some of the kingianum's distinct shape in it. Thinking about it, it becomes more incredible. If it is indeed a hybrid between kingianum and hancockii, then it is an intersectional hybrid between Dendrocoryne and Holochrysa! I've never thought such intersectional hybrid could be possible. (And quick search has revealed that no one has registered such a hybrid yet) Now I'm really tempted to get one.... |
I might believe it's a kingianum hybrid, but not with hancockii.

Well of coarse you should get one ;)

I've contacted the seller and they said that it is indeed a kingianum x hancockii. They also said that it is their own creation and further added that other interesting hybrids are now being tested in their own lab. Quite interesting.

Finally got one.

I finally gave in and bought one myself. :)
This is the whole plant: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...1&d=1517487909 Superficially, it really looks like a Den. hancockii. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...1&d=1517487909 The base of the pseudobulbs does show some similarity to Den. kingianum--fusiform, cone-like shape. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...1&d=1517487909 Leaves are slightly longer and thicker than typical hancockii. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...1&d=1517487909 The flower itself. It looks very similar to kingianum flower, but a bit larger. But the shape of lip is bit different. Also there are some hairs on the tip of the lip, a trait found in hancockii. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...1&d=1517487909 Also, the cane shows branching without any sign of root development--a very hancockii-like trait. Overall, it is very interesting hybrid. It definitely shows influences from both kingianum and hancockii. |
That's a new and different look than I have ever seen. Good luck with it, cute little bloom.
