Butterfly Orchid
All of my Florida native butterfly orchids are either blooming and or having new growths shooting up!

My tampensis is in high bud now too! Actually all my encyclias are running early this year.

What tree is that? The texture of the bark is so good! You should make some crosses with your butterfly orchids and sow the seeds on your tree. I've had some success with this technique in California so in theory you should have a LOT more success in warmer, wetter and more humid Florida.
My recommendation would be to try and make crosses with Cattleya alliance orchids that are naturally pollinated by hummingbirds... Broughtonia sanguinea Epidendrum radicans Epidendrum secundum Guarianthe aurantiaca Nageliella purpurea Prosthechea vitellina Isochilus major Laelia milleri Scaphyglottis aurea Scaphyglottis imbricata Sophronitis cernua One cross that I highly recommend is Golden Peacock. GP = Richard Mueller (Brassavola nodosa x Laelia milleri) x Prosthechea vitellina The milleri and the vitellina are both pollinated by hummingbirds and the nodosa adds some drought tolerance. It would be ideal to have a bunch of hummingbirds zooming around your garden making crazy crosses that will germinate on your trees and your neighbors' trees. |
