Cattleya dowiana aurea?
I bought another C. dowiana aurea. I've essentially killed my first one, it got black rot on the tip of it's youngest growth which I cut off and since then it hasn't grown from any of it's eyes.
Will anyone with first or secondhand experience successfully growing it give me some care tips? I'm determined to grow this cattleya. Sent from my SM-J500H using Tapatalk |

I have read that page a couple times. I was actually hoping for some input from others with experience with this orchid. Thanks though.

This one needs to dry off VERY quickly. However, it needs to be watered quite a bit when in active growth. These two needs can be tough to meet for a home grower.
When its not actively growing, it needs to be kept pretty dry. Humidity should be high at all times, however. |
I follow the Chadwick advice on growing C. dowiana. I have it near the peak of the greenhouse (warmest) and its in a slat basket filled with coarse LECA. On warm bright days during active growth (now, for example) it gets watered once late in the morning and another two or three mistings of the surface roots during the peak of the afternoon.
Mine is currently in sheath on one growth and has started a second growth on a second lead. Chadwick's suggestions are spot on. Do NOT try to grow it with Sphagnum around the roots, or any medium that holds on to a lot of water. |
