What species for a North facing window ?
Is there any species of Orchid that will do well in a North facing window. My office in my house is where I spend most of my time and it has a north facing window. measuring the light 4 times during a day came to an average of just over 900
I know I can put plants in other locations and move them in once they bloom. But everything I have read says that north facing windows are verboten when it comes to Orchids. So I thought there might be an exception to this out there. |
Aerangis citrata and Haraella odorata both surprised me with how well they grew in very dimly lit indoor situations.

Subrosa thank you, did both species bloom?
|
Jewel orchids (Ludisia, Macodes, Goodyeara) usually thrive in my northern windows.
|
Yes they did. The Aerangis was seasonal, blooming late Feb to early March, and the Haraella was in almost constant spike or bloom. It is a tiny plant, but the flower is good sized, and fragrant to boot.

It's heading toward summer here in the North (no matter what they keep telling us on GoT) and an unsheltered north-facing window could be a pretty harsh environment to a number of orchid species. I live in Florida and a north-facing window would be a lot hotter for a lot longer then a north-facing window in a New England state. Just a consideration.... |
Chuck, Baton Rouge La so fairly hot but no direct sunlight. I put a blooming phal on the window sill but one of the unopened blooms fell off before blooming. So no good for phals.
|
It may be fine for Phals. Plenty of orchids will drop buds if moved in bloom.
|
I use to put my phal mannii and equestris in my North facing window. The sun will shine in early morning in the summer but not the winter. They surprisingly did well there bloomed and all even though it was way to cold for them.
