Blc Jeremy Island 'Carmela' no roots
I bought this Cattleya from Fla and the tag states
BlC Jeremy Island 'Carmela' 4/14/2011 When I purchased it she it had 5 bulbs. I'm down to 2 and a new growth. It has no roots now and I have it its spag moss wrapped slightly on a big lava rock. I think it is doing better then before bc the bulb is getting plumped again. The other one is still wrinkled and the new growth is ok. Are there any other suggestions on what I should do. I fertilize weakly / other week. I am now watering everyday to start help new roots grow. I have seen pictures of this flower and I love the color. My Oldest Sons birthday is 4/14 and the tags date is 4/14. I don't want this orchid to die bc it has that sentimental value from the dates. Thank you |
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the date on the tag is likely just the date they divided and/or repotted the plant. It has nothing to do with the name.
I will, however, suggest you modify the label a bit, as 1) taxonomists have reclassified the brassavola in its background to rhyncholaelia, and 2) that particular clone was awarded. Rhyncholaeliocattleya (Rlc) Jeremy Island 'Carmela' HCC/AOS |

I know it's the date they repot it , but it still has a meaning to me either way. This is my tag . Should I write there new name on the back?
How and when do the names change? Thanks When I google it the BLC still comes up. |
Wow, that is a beautiful orchid. I looked it up.
I am not sure that the mount will be very good long-term. That Catteya will be putting out a ton of roots soon and they get pretty big. The other problem is if you have to move it to water it, the rock can be pretty rough on the new roots. I grow most of my Cattleyas in red lava rock and have learned that from experience, unfortunately. :| The easiest way, I found, to get a Catteya to recover was to find a place where the orchid can be left undisturbed for a few months and to stake it on top of a pot filled with red lava rock. I water the rock, not the orchid, with rain or distilled water (I have a water softener) every day for humidity. The roots would eventually begin and grow down into the medium, anchoring the orchid. By autumn, when I needed to bring the orchids inside, I could remove the stakes (pencils, chopsticks, bamboo) as the orchid no longer could wriggle in the pot. I never used fertilizer until the roots were about two inches long as the roots are pretty tender at first and I did not want to burn them. Cattleyas need a constant source of calcium so I usually add eggshelll to the mix to slowly decay and release calcium. It prevents problems later, as does planting the Cattleya on top of the mix. Good luck! ---------- Post added at 12:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:10 PM ---------- Concerning name changes, unless you are showing the orchid, you don't really need to change your tag. Orchid names seem to be in flux right now and I have seen some of my orchids renamed twice already. I left the original names on all my tags. If I show one of my orchids at my Orchid Society's show, my society will probably look up the right name and put in one of their tags for the show. :) |

Leafmite this makes sense water the rock and not the orchid because it hates water on it!!! This is why I had it upside down. I lost two new growths because of water on it. I managed to put it like this on this picture. Maybe I can most the plant with water instead of moving it.
It has grown lots of roots before but as you mentioned moving it around the roots get loose in the lava rock. I will keep your advice for not fertilizing it as well. I will update hopefully this baby will grow new roots soon! |
I learned everything the hard way, too. You can save this one, don't worry. A vendor sent me one in very bad condition a few years ago and you would never know, now. Good luck!

Thanks I edit the photo . I attached the cat to the bamboo and put lava rock on the bottom.
Thanks for your recommendations I should have posted this awhile ago! |
