Masdevallia glandulosa questions
I have an opportunity to get a M. glandulosa, but have never kept any Masdevallia species. I have a paludarium where high temps could reach the low 80s during the day in the summer with night temps around 75. Currently temps run mid/ upper 70s in the day, down to sometimes 65. Humidity runs around 70%. How would a glandulosa fare under these conditions? Tia!

Glandulosa seems to like intermediate conditions, I don't know what Fahrenheit to Celsius is but it does well between 18-26 degrees Celsius , it also likes being moist/ wet at all times so never let it dry out. 70% humidity is good for Masdevallia glandulosa but if you can , try to keep it higher.

Grow no warmer than 80 F.
They drop leaves like crazy if they go above 85 F. |
I got one and a plopped it in a moist corner of my terrarium. It dropped most of its leave, but it did put out a few new growths in a more exposed area where it got some ventilation. Microclimates are hard to predict. Where it was unhappy in one spot, it grew nicely only about an 1.5 inches away. Now the new growth has thrown out a spike and I am psyched out!
Moral of the story, it likes it moist but not wet, and yea, keep it under 80. The difference of 1.5 inches in my tank not only provided more ventilation but also about another 1 of distance from the artificial lights, which probably dropped the temp every so slightly. |
