Can anyone get me to the genus at least of this wild orchid in Colombia? Thank you.

I could be wrong, but it looks a lot like Catasetum Planiceps. The region would be correct for this species as well since it grows in North South America

Yes that could be it but the structure looks a little different in the images I found of P planiceps. Here is a closer view of the flowers.

Ah, you're right. Hopefully, someone more knowledgable will be able to identify then :)

Could it be a member of Anguloa?

Maybe Catasetum ochraceum?

Pitter 08-06-2014 07:23 AM

By golly I think that's it and the description of it's growing environment fits to a t the location where I found it. Thanks very much. Interestingly none of the images I've run across show the purple "tongue" that is on some of flowers of my plant.

I second Catasetum ochraceum.

If it isn't, it's a very similar looking species.

Thanks for putting the name in italics; I looked back at my post and realized I forgot the 'um' at the end. The hazards of typing while being distracted by the cat!

I also confirm Catasetum ochraceum, male flowers.
