Mystery Onc...

I received an eBay order today and got a bonus plant...since I've never repotted an onc and I'm nervous about the 5 or 6 I need to repot today, I thought I would start with this. Not sure if this plant will make it...that large bulb looks a little sketchy to me. Anyway, the thready root remnants- should I trim them? The growths are all sort of loose so I don't think I should try to separate them unless that one bulb is infected with something I can't treat. I'm going to put this into orchiata/sponge rock/charcoal (a medium grade) with some granite chips (Ray's Better Off medium). Advice welcomed as well as any clue about what plant it is. ! I rinsed it and it's hanging out on the sideboard drying now.

Is this even an oncidium? I just repotted a Miltassia and the root system was the threads I was expecting but this guy has some regular roots too. Sometimes I feel like I don't know anything!!

The "threads" you see are the remmants of old roots. The velamen is gone from them

Without a tag it could be anything from a oncidium, mitonia, brassia, etc.

If it were mine I'd leave the older backbulb as the new growth is receiving nourishment from it. I'd only remove it if it started to rot or totally dried up.

Plant with the oldest PB against the side of the pot with the new growth facing toward the opposite side. You can leave the threads on, since you don't have a ton of good roots they'll help stabilize the plant in the pot. Try not to bury the PB in your potting mix, just the roots.

Good luck with the repotting :)

Thanks! It'll be interesting to see what blooms if I can get it to spike.

Grower wrote back and said he thought it might be Dgmra. Winter Wonderland 'White Fairy' but wasn't at all sure. Should be interesting to see!
