Hausermann's- my first order!

Not that they need more feedback :) but it's my first order! Very excited. Phal. Surf Song (labeled Dtps. Surf Song) in bud...holy cats. 6" pot which I knew but three spikes and one of them is branching...I can't wait. Tons of roots. Very minimal damage- they pack beautifully. I'm not sure why the leaves are discolored but they are nice and turgid. I don't have a 6" clear pot- just a 5.5" so I think I will have to repot into this unless I find one out tomorrow. I would rather have some holes on the sides. It's in dense moss now. Hopefully repotting now won't blast the buds. And since I could add on a little without increasing my shipping, I also picked up Phal. Zuma's Pixie x Veitchiana also in bud. Can't wait to see it bloom. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/21/dysysy8a.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/21/age3agad.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/21/gypejaqu.jpg

Edit- ooh, reading more and I see Dtps. often have reddish-green leaves due to their genetics. The leaves look great otherwise so I'm going to operate under the assumption things are fine unless I see otherwise.

I'm having a repot debate. My inclination with new plants is to repot and I started soaking medium but then I thought...hmm, maybe I better not with them in bud. Best not to bother them then, eh? Googling it and looking in my two reference books gives me conflicting information and I'm aware I may get conflicting info here too. They are in moss which makes me uncomfortable, especially the Surf Song which is a 6" pot with lots of moss but it's also SUCH a happy plant with a zillion buds as well as roots and three spikes etc. I think I might be best served to not repot yet...can I dry out my medium and reuse it (medium grade fir/perlite/charcoal mix)? I'm still a bit of a beginner but I got bit by a thousand orchid bugs at once.

Wow~ healthy looking plants arrived in great conditions!

Don't repot while it is in bud.

Yeah...that's what I keep thinking but the moss they are in is so, so saturated. It makes me nervous. I don't want the roots to rot.

So when will you repot? Those plants will be in bud and flower for many months. Will you then put off repotting because it is winter? Or because they have spikes again? Repot now, while the plants are at maximum health and with a summer growth season before the dimmer cooler days of winter. The sooner the better for the buds and spikes developing now, and for the long term health of the plant.

To answer your other question... yes, you can dry out the medium and use it later. Spread in a thin layer so it dries out quickly.

I did it. I need a stiff drink now, but I did it and I'm glad- there was some early rot in both plants. I can't believe how much moss I pulled out of there! I think if I were more experienced I could have managed but it just made me very nervous. This way I know the plant's status. If I lose these blooms, so be it...I know exactly what the roots look like now. Now to bite my nails- I guess I'll find out fairly quickly if I'll lose the buds!

And thank you for the validation...I've been twitching about this for a few days and I'm glad I got it over with.

Hausermann's is a reputable seller. They will sell you only healthy plants and with no bugs in the pot.
I have to repot anything that arrives from the mail, just to check on the plant and the status of the roots.
As long as you did not disturb a lot of roots, your spikes are safe and they will open its buds to a wonderful display. I have seen the picture of the spikes and they will be awesome.
Make sure to place it in a window where it will thrive. Do not keep on moving it. Let it stay in a position so the buds will not blast. Its a humidity issue of displacing the position of the pot. Every room in a house have different moisture levels.
