Brassavola nodosa
 

I know nodosa's are notoriously easy to grow and EVERYONE has one, but for some reason this is one of my favorite species!!:biggrin: Anyway, this is my one and only nodosa and the scent at night is great, althought the scent in summertime seems to be much better:scratchhead: !! Thanks for looking!!

Beautiful flowers, Steve. And no, not everyone has one. This is one species that I would really like to get, even though I don't know anything about it--well, other than its reputation for night-fragrant flowers. Is it a fast grower? I have a Rhyncholaelia digbyana, which is the only thing in my collection that's remotely related to Brassavola nodosa, and even though I love it and it's easy to grow and bloom, it's not a fast grower (at least here in the Midwest). Congratulations on your nodosa. It's quite pretty.

I have three different varieties of this guy and they are all seedlings. I can't wait for them to bloom. Steve, they take full sun at our latitude. I suspect without the bright light all you'll get is nice green leaves and no blossoms, but we'll see.

Thanks for the kind words Steve!! This is one orchid that grows like a weed!! I think that is one of the other reasons that I like this species (and its hybrids) so much. You're pretty much guaranteed to have 2 blooms per year. Rhyncolaelia digbyana is a super slow grower, even here in Hawaii. Nodosa is the exact opposite!! I highly recommend you get one!! Conditions for digbyanas and nodosas are almost identical, so you should have no problem.

Ross is right about the light. I grow mine in full Hawaiian sun and the nodosa LOVES it!!:biggrin:

I am in Missouri, mine is in the bird room no room in the greenhouse for it , out it goes in the spring am. sun then dappled sun, it blooms late summer . I won't post a picture you are probably tired of old Spiney as I call it . I have another nodosa B. Susan Fuchs X Largo it stays in the greenhouse blooms in the spring and is in bud now . I think you can grow and bloom one in Indiana . Gin

My nodosa is in a south facing window and also under t5s. It's budded out right now. I can hardly wait for the flowers to open. It's grown phenomenally quickly. It's like grass on steroids!

Oh dear, looks like I gotta send my Little Stars for a sun tanning session to make it bloom!

Excellent pictures of many people's favorite. Sweet fragrance, that fills the yard a couple of times a year. In just 3 years mine have filled 6" baskets. I resist dividing them for fear that I will kill...

I have a B. Nodosa that is slow growing for me, but alive and well. I don't have enough light for it this time of year. Thanks for the pics....helps me to keep my patience in check. My little stars is about to open....several spikes too. This will be my first experience with a night fragrant orchid and i am so excited. Seems to be taking it's sweet time to open, though. Yes, patience needed once again.
I got a "Star of Bethlehem" a year ago (also night fragrant).....blooming size and was hoping for a bloom this Christmas, but nothing is showing. Bummer! Guess I missed the boat on that one. kiki-do
