Amaryllis Seedlings - NEW update
these seedlings are about 18 months old.
I found one blog post that said that seedlings can be forced into dormancy, most say they must grow year-round. I have a space problem and would prefer them to go into storage, along with my other bulbs. Has anyone any advice to offer - based on their experience ? Ironically - as you can see in the photo - some of the seedlings have produced offsets. The last thing I need ! As these are a product of a selfing, I wonder if the seedlings have returned to type and lost the mother characterisitics? I suppose only time will tell - hope to bloom these next year. The mother only produced offsets this year - after 3 years ! http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/03/ny7ujaru.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/03/5e5emudy.jpg there is also a range of bulb sizes evident. Some are large and some appear to be the same size as when I planted them out a couple of months back. |
I am searching. I found this for you:
AMARYLLIS: YEAR-ROUND CARE ---------- Post added at 02:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:04 PM ---------- this too: How to Pull Up Amaryllis Bulbs for Winter Storage | eHow You are so lucky to have all of those. That is wonderful. Besides orchids I love, amaryllis, African violets, Christmas cactus and jasmine. |
I toss them in a paper bag and stick them...wherever (in the house/basement). In the spring, I plant them out in the garden. Mine bloom in the early part of summer and grow all year. The smaller bulbs will take a few years to get large enough. I just gave most of mine away and left some in the ground to become mush...they were all from the original bulb someone gave me and the same color. I kept two.

thanks. I do overwinter a whole range of bulbs, including amaryllis.
My issue is with seedling/immature bulbs. I don't know whether to just pot them up in small pots and try and provide sufficient lighting.......or even better.......to try and make them go dormant. I don't know if the smaller bulbs, or any "seedling" bulb, will survive any type of dormancy. I had them potted up last year, but they took up a lot of space and foliage didn't look good at all. |

I selfed an Apple Blossom Amaryllis
Appleblossom Amaryllis as these apparently don't breed "true", I am interested in seeing the bulbs flower. Already something strange has happened in that a few of the bulbs have offsets.....when they should have just grown larger :) this guy had the space.........my windows are full of orchids Amaryllis from seed : Grows on You |

Wow! That's a lot of bulbs! When the weather gets cooler around here all of my bulbous plants start to go dormant. I just cut the leaves off and put them in a bag until the spring. I think you could put them all in a bag (or bags). But to be sure I would also so some more research on other sites to be safe though.
