Flasking video?
Hi all, a couple of months ago I remember watching this 3 part tutorial on Youtube on seed flasking. I don't remember much about it but I thought it was very informative. I've been considering trying my hand at it and have been looking for it all day and can't seem to find it.
Does anyone know which ones I'm talking about? If so, are they still there and can you post a link? Thanks! |

I orginally posted this 3 part series in May 2011. I think this is the one your looking for.:)
Orchid Flasking on YouTube Three part video series by Frank Tromble. Step by step instructions from disinfecting seed thru to flasking. Includes instructions on microwaving and autoclaving (pressure cooker) flasks for disinfection. Frank states that out of 100 flasks he's gotten 0% contamination. He makes it look pretty easy! Yes thank you! I have no idea why I wasn't able to find it again. :D
Do you have any showing a replating? |
Unfortunately, I don't but I'm sure that if you do a search you'll be able to find something.

What do you need to know about replating?
|
How do you know when it's time to replate? A video on someone doing it would be really great, I wouldn't know how to actually do it so that there's no contamination and what is the easiest way I guess.
|
I did come across one or two. there are usually two times that you replate. Firstly at the protocorm stage before roots and proper leaves have formed. You simply use a nichrome loop or spatula to divide protocorms from one flask and spread on the surface into several others. The main reason is to stop overcrowding. You can also replate at a later stage when seedlings have formed. You need to use long forceps to grab the little plants then gently bury them a little into the media in new flasks. At this stage it can be done to spread them out or simply to provide fresh media.

Thanks Dan, a few more questions: how do you know the right amount of protocorms or seedlings to put in each replated flask?
And for people that don't have glove boxes, how do you make sure you get no contamination when replating? Also, when replating seedlings, how do you know when it's time for fresh media? How can you tell? |

2. Make a glovebox... it's pretty easy. I can give instructions if you want. 3. Growth slows down and you get some turning brown. I think ppl generally reflask due to overcrowding so may not run into this too often. |
