This orchid was Purchased at my local grocery store. Granted they offer the best orchids in town they hardly ever have I.D.s. All this one said is Intergeneric Odontoglossum Oncidium Orchid. I have heard that it has Beallara Marfitch in it but i want some more info so i can give it what it needs to re bloom this baby. i love this flower!!!

Very nice! Did you re pot it into that pot or buy it like that? The plant looks very healthy.
If you did re pot the only suggestion I can give you is to try and find a smaller pot as it looks a little on the large size. Good Luck! |
Thank You for the tip...also..
I did buy it this way. How small do you think I should go? This bloom didn't last very long. I also heard this plant is finicky? Do you know if that's true? Should I wait to re pot till the bloom is finished? It's only got about a week left. It's also got a second spike with buds developing. Thank you by the way!

If the plant doesn't have a name it will be pretty much impossible to ID it. There are just way too many hybrids that look alike. But since you know it is an intergeneric Odontoglossum Oncidium you should be able to find info on its care. I don't think it would be hard to rebloom. The one I have blooms really easy.

How did you hear it has Beallara Marfitch in it? If it doesn't say that on the tag you can only take that as a guess. I would grow it intermediate.

I heard it was part Beallara from a forum member on Orchid Talk. I wish i could understand why any grower doesn't provide I.D's for Orchids they ship. :( Makes it harder for beginners like me to really stay on top of each one. I am completely new to Pbulb Orchids and there is just so many! It hasn't been like my learnings on Phals at all. Though I must be honest i am much more happy with the Pbulb Orchids.

Could be a Beallara Marfitch (images here https://www.google.com/search?q=Beal...w=1280&bih=685). Nice thing with the Onc alliance intergenerics is most will take the same care. Lightly moist media, moderate light.

Odontocidiums. Cross between odontoglossum and oncidium. Grow better warm than odontoglossum. They do not like to be soaked. Just damp most of the time. Spagnum moss or fine grade fir bark with spongerock. I add charcol to keep the mix fresh. Well watered but they don't like water with high salt or mineral concentrations. I would use RO or distilled water. Intermediate to warm and moderate light levels. Wait until you see new growth growing from the base of the pbulbs and it is 1-2 inches high before you repot as these do not like their roots disturbed. Put it in a smaller pot when you do repot. Just enough room for 1-2 years growth. That's about an inch to 1 and 1/2 inches between the plant and the edge of the pot. Shallow pots work best. If you don't have a shallow pot just don't pot so high in the pot. Don't cut the roots when you repot. Just take out of the pot, shake or carefully tease out what old media you can, and put in new media. I always mound up some gravel or lava rock (foam peanuts is ok too) under the center of the rootball to keep that from getting overly wet. That is where rot will start if watered too much. Leaves should be a light green. If they are drooping, then give more light. When the new pbulb has matured (stopped growing any taller) then switch to a bloom booster feed to get better flowering. After the flowers fade, keep just damp. Not wet at all until new growths come up from the base of the pbulbs. Pic 2 shows what new growth looks like. Let it get twice as tall before you repot. Pic 1 shows that you can pot in a course mix with good results anmd what the color should be. Pic three shows what happens if you water it too much. They can bed allowed to become dry. Not great but better than overwatering them. Also shows how small a pot they can go into. Pic 4 shows that tyhey can get bone dry and still grow well. They can be grown on a mount. They are hardy plants. Mine bloom every year. I have a bealara, and an oncidium blooming right now.

Thank You!
I saved all those pictures and I'll be reverting back to them often. I am happy to say I have a new growth on one of my dancing ladies then!
Does the new growth look the same for all pbulb orchids? My miltoniopsis has a growth that looks just like that as well. Do you know if miltoniopsis like to be dryer or more damp? My onions are somewhat wrinkling and I know I'm not underwatering. Could I be over watering by keeping it more wetter than dry? I read it likes to be evenly moist. |
