Hwra. Lava Burst 'Puanani'

This one has done very well this year. Six spikes! The color is a deeper red this year which I attribute to our much cooler spring temps. I'll take another picture when it is in full bloom.

Terri, Yours is a beauty. How old is yours?. I've only had mine for 6 months, with only 1 flower spike in that time. What is your treatment of this orchid. Does yours like more sun, than Cats.like. Do your let it dry out during winter? We have winter here at the moment, and I don't want to lose it. The little thing doesn't look the best.Your help would be appreciated.

I love this orchid! Yours looks great! Mine just has one new growth, but with 2 spikes right now. First rebloom of this one. :D

Queenslander, I dry out a bit between waterings but not totally even in winter. I do keep an eye on the rootzone though. When I got it it had lots of root rot. I think repotting every couple of years might be a good idea since they do seem to be susceptible to root rot. Fresh media dries faster. I grow it as bright as my Catts, but with cooler temps if possible.

I brought this back from the island of Kauai, so that would have been December of 2008. After I cleaned it up and repotted it just took off, and has been growing like a weed ever since. This is it's 3rd rebloom for me.

The only thing I don't like about it is the new growth tends to ladder up instead of sideways. I think you can see that in the bottom picture. Consequently it always looks a bit untidy to me. ;)

The laddering, I suppose is because of the Oncidium link to this intergeneric hybrid. Most of my oncidiums climb out of the pot. I hope my Howeara is as good as yours in 2-3years time. Annette

I like that color! How large is that pot/plant?

cday2inflorida 06-24-2011 06:06 AM

Well grown!

quiltergal 06-24-2011 03:50 PM

Norris, it's only in a 3 inch pot. The plant is quite small, though I suspect in time it will spread quite a bit.

Thats just what I wanted to hear! I'm running out of room here. ;)
