Dendrobium speciosum update

Almost all of the blooms are now open (maybe about 50 or so buds still in the final stages of opening).

Very nice. I long for an orchid I can say has overpowering scent.

what a great looking and healthy plant...what are the growing conditions?...do you know of any nurseries selling them

PleuroPal 01-30-2011 12:06 PM

Wow, that's awesome! I've had mine for a few years now, and even though it continues to grow and seems healthy, no blooms yet. What's the secret? Mine is outdoors year round.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments.

Tom and Ray, my speciosums get warm/hot summers with lots of water, humidity and light (full morning sun until noon, then only a slight amount of shading to prevent burning for the rest of the day), followed by cool/cold winters with much less water. Throughout the year they are given minimal amounts of fertilizer, perhaps 1/8 teaspoon per gallon once a week (if I can remember). Summer highs are around 95 F (with accompanying 85 - 95% humidity), and winter lows are between, say, 45 and 55 F.

Tom, both Andy's Orchids and Santa Barbara Orchid Estate carry this species. I got this plant from SBOE many years ago as a baby.
