Should I repot Dend phal now? It has keiki
 

I have a noid Dendrobium phal type that bloomed around Thanksgiving and now is putting out two new canes from the base of the cane that just bloomed. Additionally, it is putting out 3 keike from the tip of two older canes. It needs to be repotted - (old media and cracked pot).

Will repotting the main plant now harm the keiki development?

How much roots do I need on the keiki before separating them?

I'd just set it inside a larger pot for support and let the keikis grow some. Before taking them off their roots need to be 2 1/2 to 3 inches long. I'd enjoy all those blooms you will soon be having.

Do you have new growth from the new canes that are starting from the base of the old one ? If not I would wait till there are new roots starting, Dends. do not like to be re-potted once you have new roots started use a pot that only allows for no more then 2 years of growth and as small a pot as you can . Not sure if re-potting will slow the keikies or not .I try to let them grow at least 3 or 4 inch long roots before removing them to a small pot .

Yes, I have two new canes (about one inch tall) starting at the base of the cane that most recently bloomed.

I ment new roots from the new canes, sorry i was not clear :) l see new roots in the picture and think you can re-pot now with out damage to them ..keikies are not big enough to be removed . They will probably be ok might slow them down but better to re-pot before the new roots on mom are too long and are easily cracked .. Happy Growing !

Do I cut off the old backbulb stalks that are leafless and dried up?

If they are brown and dry I remove them , be sure to use a sterile razor blade then throw out the blade so in the future it is not used on a different plant . You might have to stake the plant so it does not wobble in the pot and break the roots ..

from what I can see in the pics, the leafless canes appear to be alive still. They still provide support to the plant, so it's probably best to leave them. Some Dens can bloom on old leafless canes, but I don't know if yours can or not.
