Mounting Cymbidiums on wood
I have over two thousand Cymbidium seedlings to pot. I was told by my Orchid friend to mount them on wood.... Has anyone done that?
Failure and success stories are more than welcome |
Cyms are semi-terrestrial, so I don't know if mounting them is ideal. I haven't ever heard of anyone growing them this way. I'm sure if someone has or does, they will chime in :)

I would agree with WhiteRabbit. Cyms are semi-terestrial. The orchids which do well mounted are those that naturally grow on trees or rocks.

I think mounting cymbidiums would be a big mistake.
In fact it is predictable that cymbidiums would die within a few days mounted. The problem is that cyms like to stay a little wet at all times - not like cats that like to dry out. Just recieved 6 flasks of cymbidiums - thats 240 plants- more or less. Will use CHC for the first planting just because of the moisture requirement. |
I already have some Cyms growing on a mango tree with no problem at all.....they even flower.
I'm just trying to save space with the amount of Orchids that i have |
Rogerman,
I didnt notice where you live - there are cymbidiums that would grow in trees in your country - think I would contact Pakkret at BlogGang.com : : สำเภางาม : if I wanted advise about growing cymbidiums in Thailand. Most of us are not priviledged to grow in the same conditions you have. |
There are actually a few Cymbidium species that epiphytical as well as lithophytes.
One of them I believe would be Cymbidum aloifolium. |

Thanks for all your help |
Would like to visit the Pakkret nursery myself. Think they have one of the worlds leading authorities who specializes in warm or hot growing cymbidiums. Only
10 km - think you are lucky. |
The Pak kret nursery is only one of MANY MANY nurseries around here
