DO you buy Home Depot "baggy orchids"?
 

Sometimes, I buy these baggy orchids from Sun Bulb. I feel theneed to "liberate" these plants from prison I guess.
This is one I bought maybe 12-15 months ago, Ascda. Suksamran "Sunny". It has been a great bloomer! It has bloomed for me 4-5 times since I have had it.

Yes I do. My Suksamran died though. It bloomed and never came back. I have a V. Robert Delight "dark red Kru-Chom" that has yet to bloom, but the growth is great. I am picky as to which ones I rescue. They have to be fresh and have new roots or I'll pass.
Lowes seems to keep them fresher. I watch for new deliveries.
I aslo have many other types of Onc. and Epi. purchased there. All is well. If you don't mind seedlings and starters.

I probably would atlease try them, But we don't get those here. Beautiful bloom, lovely color for sure :D

I've only purchased one plant from a store like that and it was Lowes. Usually their stock is not cared for and not in good shape and I fear bugs hitchiking.

The Lowes in town doesn't have orchids , In Springfield they have , In the past they had a nice selection then the lady that worked that Dept. quit :( now only dead-robiums and phal-a-rot-a -mas .. Gin

I think with any big store you have to get to the plants when they first come in. I am not sure if you can call ahead of time and ask when they recieve their shipment in? .. I know they do not give their orchids the conditions they need and I have seen chids suffer by trauma from radical temperatures to careless handling. When I go to these stores and see how the condition these chids are in .. I wish I could take them home and give them the TLC they need ..
but I only have so much space!

I agree. The local store I frequent carries a steady supply and one of the shift managers lives across the street from me so I get advance word when new shipments arrive. I have purchased several Phals and Beallaras from them and they just started carrying Paphs. They actually sell product from a major wholesaler in SW Michigan who picks up the old stock and rotates stuff frequently, so specimens tend to be pretty good when first arriving.

I have also purchased them, but I only buy if they look in good condition. Mine are still fairly new (a few months) and all of them have new root growth, etc. and look good so far. No blooms yet, though. Some of the ones I purchased are quite small and others are probably close to blooming size.

I'm glad to hear others buy these, as I am new to growing orchids and thought this was an economical way to start a collection. The ones here are also Sun Bulb Company.

I don't get baggy orchids from Sun Bulb here. But I never buy orchids just to liberate them...

I admit I buy from the HD, being that I am one of the horticultural specialist as well as ordering the plants :lol: Personally I have not had much luck with SunBulb, not really sure as to what's up with them but being a corporate buy, it's hard to get what you want with those little bagged guys. So you get what you pay for and yes, some are the best but noting we do not get that particular inventory rotated "our buy" they will keep them around until one finds them fit to mark them down and/or throw them away.

As for the others, yeppers the best time is when they come into the store. I gave the guy who puts our plants away up the road last week due to him leaving 45 orchids of various types in closed box's until the last. I did get a huge credit back but this is beside the point. I am guessing from packaged/delivered...at least 24-36 hours in a closed box...talk about bud blast:(( , new rep came in and told him straight up...orchids first:evil:. Each store has there own way of taking care of orchids, our store...it's myself an another specialist, who is well versed in plants and has her own greenhouse...so it really depends on the employees for the department as to how they will take care of them.
