Dendrobiums and is it a Bulbo? BBG. love them!

love this pink/fuchsia pendant Dendrobium but what is it? saw at show in Jersey mislabeled as D. macrophyllum and unlabeled at BBG.
In the same enclosure there is also this other plant that I wonder if it is a Bulbophyllum. Any ideas? there was no tag that I could see. Actually I am really annoyed that the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has so many plants that are unlabeled or labeled in inaccessible places [ and i have 15/20 20/20 vision!] and sometimes mislabeled. Anyway love this that was enclosed behind glass windows [temp was 30 C] |

Very nice. Number 4 looks like a Masdevalia.

N 4 is same as N 5. leaves are large fora Masdevallia as far as I know. reminds me more of a Bulbophyllum but without PB

Agreed re: BBG...I went to see their orchid collection today and couldn't see most of the i.d. tags. I actually just came to this forum to post some of my photos and get help i.d.'ing them!
|
I got reprimanded by a guard because i was reaching to look at a tag that was turned the wrong way.
I told that the tags are positioned in a way that can't be read. A Botanic Garden is a scientific/educational institution not a flower / bouquet shop. probably would be good to let them know. anyway does anyone know what are these? Sheiman, can you post your images here? |

The pink Dendrobium looks like D. sulawesiense (syn. glomeratum). I don't think the other NOID has the right kind of lip to be a Masdevallia. The petals would also be much reduced in size (with larger, fused sepals) if it were a Masdie. But it can't be a Bulbo if it doesn't have pseudobulbs, either. I feel like I've seen it before, though.

Thanks,
i never seen a Masdevallia with such large leaves, maybe 8" long. also in that section the temp was around 90 F. are there Masdevallias that grow in those conditions? |
Stefano, 6 and 7 look like Den. nobile. Nice pictures!
That's irritating about the poor labeling, I feel like identifying plants helps people engage with them on more levels than when they're just displayed for aesthetic effect. And after all isn't a city botanical garden about helping people develop relationships with plants? Maybe you should write them a letter. I hope to go to BBG next time we visit my brother-in-law in Queens, maybe I'll pester them about it, too. --Nat |
