This plant also at one point in time suffered from dehydration. Note the buckled leaf on one of the growths. It also suffers from malnutrition. The discoloration on the leaves is a telltale sign. I do see a pseudobulb on one of the growths. |
I agree about the annoyance at BBG of not always being able to read the tags/not having tags, etc. However, I've met the orchid curator there when I took a class there last year and the main reason for the mislabels/no tags and lots of hybrids is because the vast majority of their plants were donated from private collections and so have/don't have whatever tags they showed up with.

I see that the tags are there - just many are hidden or washed out.
If the plants come from collections it seems unlikely that came without a tag |
My point is coming from a private collection, there is no guarantee that they are labeled properly or came with tags and if they are hybrids, with no tag they can't be identified. Not everyone is careful with such things. But yes, a lot of the tags there are quite difficult to see as well. I suspect that for most people visiting, the names on the tags wouldn't mean much and so it isn't a priority at the moment. The curator also mentioned that they had received another private collection of cool growing montane species and are going to be re-doing the entire exhibit at some point aimed at those, so perhaps they will update tags at that point as well.

In the plants behind the window there is a tag in the pot but it is impossible to read. They could just use an inkjet printer and some sturdy paper and make a quick tag to put in front of the pot.
anyway I think the one I like a lot might be maxillaria longissima Maxillaria longissima - Ecuagenera |

here are some other photos i shot a few days ago. I checked - some tags are behind the pot and some pots behind a glass. so the name is there but you cant read.
Also I would beware at buying orchids at the store. when they just receive them they look great but what sits on a shelf gets over watered , tossed over and tags get lost. 25 $ is too much maybe unless they are fresh... anyway love that the BBG is free in the winter and on tuesdays and sat mornings. And i like that in teh wet house plants look like a slice of nature rather than just a bunch of blooms in cheesy pots like at some shows. |
