Orchids in baskets?
Anyone else here plant in baskets? I am not talking about the wooden slat 'orchid baskets' I am talking about wicker, jute & etc... To me it seemed a natural. I buy them cheap at the local thrift stores when I find one I like. My phals seem to like them in particular, I don't have so much experience with the others yet. The air circulation around the roots is excellent in them.
I know that repotting may require basket destruction. Any other caveats I should take heed of? |
The only down side I can think of is the total destruction of the basket. I'm sure it makes a beautiful display.

Sounds like a neat idea! Do you have any pics of your chids in baskets? Really interested to see!

Hi Raihana!
I do that same thing! I love it, my babies love it too! My momma & poppa love pick me up any kind of cute basket findings at garage sales, estates, thrift, etc. And ship them all nearly 1000 miles to me ;) |

Hope this link works :) This picture is several months old. The roots are now snaking thickly through the basket. She seems to really love it. The medium is mostly orchid bark but I always add a bit of sphagnum to hold a bit more moisture as well since it will dry out VERY quickly... the ventilation is awesome! I hope to have some newer shots soon. I am looking at cameras now. The children broke my old one :( |
