Winter status report!
I know California has received much rainfall the past few weeks as well as, and I know I will get flack from those in areas with actual seasons, blistering cold. I wanted to know how everyone's fairing this winter!
Most of mine are not protected with a roof, and get their pots flushed from rain, being in California this rain is usually cold. No rot issues, just damage from the winds blowing over pots or blowing baskets into everything in range. My most tender outdoor orchids, or ones I fear are most sensitive, have been unaffected by temps down to 31 so far with no protection. Those being Vanda coerulea, Laelia purpurata, Holcoglossum amesianum and Laelia lobata. I'm interested to hear about others cold season status! |
Well today has been rather cold with a cold wind blowing from the North-West. The temperature has got down to about 70 degrees F. The only thing suffering here is me!! It's too cold!!
|
you are too funny!  here we are with 3 feet of snow and temps down in the minuses and you are complaning about 70 degrees F. Tell ya what lets trade weather ok:evil:
|
Rain Rain and more Rain today , mine are in the greenhouse demanding attention .. 70 ! A heat wave . Trade you any day.
|
When you are used to weather in the high 90's- low 100's, day and night.....70 gets rather cool:biggrin: :_(
This IS supposed to be the cool season here....... I'm originally from New Zealand and i know what it is like to be freezing but, now that i'm totally used to living here :(( I now HATE the cold. One thing unfortunate is, it hasn't rained here for two months sofar...... one and a half months to go before the rains come. |
i miss the rain...when i lived in california it was so dry during the summer season, i was begging for rain....i imagine it is the same there....the sound of the rain on a tin roof always soothes me.

I was lovin' the rain for 2 days! Now we are back to 50 MPH winds and snow. So much for green grass.

I know that 35 degrees does not sound cold to those of you living in the northern states but in San Diego it is way to cold.
I grow my orchids in a unheated greenhouse or on my unprotected patio, so when it got down into the 30's, which I was not prepared for, I believe that some of my orchids have been damaged, they have spots that resemble bruises on some of the leaves. On a good note some of my Phals. have started to signs of spike, my Phal. Mini Mark has double spike, and I have a few Phal violacea in spike. I hope they make it through this cold spell. |
You all talking about winter and how to maintain heat .
And about minus temperature . I never experienced about minus things .I am thinking a way of reducing heat levels. Bec here temp is 85 F degrees . In the afternoon it is too much hot. I am thinking about covering with bed sheets . |
So far the coldest its been is 33F which occurred on 27 Dec 08. I only have a couple NoIDs orchids that show any cold damage. Most of my orchids are mounted under shade cloth...the rest are mounted on trees. My orchids received a good drenching in the rain and seemed to perk up despite the cold...probably because the quality of the rain water is better than the quality of our tap water.
