Laelia lundii mounted vs potted
 

I am considering purchasing a L. lundii. It's being offered potted or mounted and was thinking about getting a mounted one but wanted to see if anyone has this and which one you would prefer/recommend. The potted one is supposedly in a 4" pot. Both are blooming size.

Mine is mounted, and it tends to be a rambler so that seems to be a "natural" configuration. But it depends on how well you are able to care for mounted plants in general, It certainly can dry out (probably needs to... mine rambles over the mount, no moss so it does dry out between waterings) but I also have decent humidity most of the time.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but what kind of light does your get where you keep it?

Strong morning light, then somewhat shaded as the day progresses, would describe it as "filtered sun to bright shade".

I also recently purchased it from Brookside Orchids and I went for a potted one (came in buds) as I am now unmounting some of my Orchids b'z of watering frequency for mounted once.

If mounted plant isn't working out for you, unmount carefully... root preservation is the name of the game. If the plant isn't "intimate" with the mount (like if there's a pad of moss underneath that actually has the roots) and it just falls off when you cut the strings, you're fine. As long as new roots are starting (something that happens this time of year) it'll transition well. However, if the the roots are firmly attached to the mount, I suggest just placing the whole thing (mount and all) into your pot. Eventually new roots will go into the medium, but the older ones will still be preserved. If the transition takes a year or more, that's OK... patience!

Nice that it came in buds. Mounted and potted are both flowering size. I'm still debating. Probably shouldn't procrastinate because there are a limited number of the mounted ones available. I have other mounted Laelias so thought I could just put it outdoors and hang it from the lemon tree where the others are hanging. I've been OK when it comes to watering my mounted ones. Seems to be easier for me than watering the potted ones.
Out of curiosity, did you purchase anything else from them? I'm thinking about purchasing the L. jongheana or their Leptotes cross. Also debating about shipping choice...2 day or just the express saver. I would think that even with express saver it wouldn't take more than 2 days to get the orchids. I've done both in the past. Can't remember how long it took the express saver shipment to arrive.

It was my first order from them, I got 4 Orchids and selected 3 days shipping which was cheap option for me, they were nicely packed and came in good shape.

They do ramble, I think sometime in the next year or 2 I will need to cut the leads and rearrange them closer together or mound them somehow.
I had it potted at first but it didn't do well for me until i mounted it. Even then I had the mount in a smaller bonsai pot. Here is a photo now and the original set up from 2019.

Nice order. Did you order recently? Shouldn't be bad to use the cheapest shipping right now. Doesn't take long to ship from No. to So. CA and weather not frigid.

I like Kyoguchi and have a few crosses but want just a Kyoguchi. However I prefer blooming size. I keep hoping that Fred Clarke will offer a pure Kyoguchi so I can pick one up at the SVO open house.
